Reaching and Teaching
Stressed and Anxious Students Online Course

Instructor: Barbara Oehlberg, MA

In every classroom there are students who have experienced grievous losses. For some, these losses have been multiple; for some, they have been sudden and shocking, throwing the entire family into crisis. The feelings that may be experienced under the umbrella of fear include a sense of abandonment, betrayal, helplessness, shame, hopelessness, disappointment, sadness, grief and depression. While these feelings emerge out of perceptions or interpretations, not reality, the feelings are very real to youngsters and ultimately drive their behaviors, that is, until the feelings are transformed. The appropriate behaviors cannot be resolved until the children have had an opportunity to symbolically process and integrate their loss.

The good news is that there is a wealth of sensory activities that permit children to connect with the overwhelming memories in order to externalize the imprint of terror and helplessness and over come it. This course will provide the information and interventions needed for teachers to reach and teach these students.

Cost of taking this course online is $100. Upon successful completion of assignments tests and evaluation, a certificate of completion can be downloaded. CEs are not included in the price of this course but can be purchased in the TLC Online Bookstore. If you have questions about CEUs email [email protected].

Comments from Students

I really enjoyed this course and learned quite a bit. Thanks to Barbara for all the excellent feedback.

This course provided me with more resources I can use with my students.

This is my first experience with an on-line course and it was terrific. The course was very, very interesting to me and I am sure it will help  me in the work I do. I just get by when using a computer and this was set up in a way that was easy to manage which was a pleasure! Thank you to Barbara for your articles, comments and support and to Deva for making it a friendly experience with my computer.

Barbara has been supportive and generous with her time and comments. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and I'm sure much of what I have learned will be used as I work with children and families. I never have done an on-line course before and this was manageable. Thank you!

Barbara and everybody else at TLC has been extremely helpful and knowledgeable, I look forward to working more with and learning more from the people and educational material at TLC! Thank you.

Ms. Oehlberg was very good at communicating key focal points and giving helpful/insightful feedback during this course. I would certainly sign up for the next one she instructs.

The instructor's feedback and commentary were extremely beneficial to me, as it helped orient my focus and assessment skills along the way. Ms. Oehlberg was very open and direct in her communications, which allowed me to excel in this course. It was a pleasure, and privilege learning from one of TLC's finest Annual Award Recipients.Thank you.
