2011

Thanks so much for coming to our school yesterday, Caelan. Your presentation was great, and the parents really responded to it. Lots of positive feedback on the evaluations. They only wished it had been longer. Thanks for all the materials as well. I'm excited to get to use the resiliency materials at work with our students. TLC is my favorite program out there, and I use techniques from it even with children who are in trauma. It was great for our parents to be able to get some knowledge as well about trauma and grief, and to know what they could do.

Kristina Wolff, LLMSW, Cesar Chavez Academy School Counselor, Detroit, MI

Your program has provided me with a depth of understanding, knowledge and skill to help victim/survivors of single and complex trauma. The TLC program focuses on taking a holistic view of the child/adolescent/adult and his/her life. A child is not reduced to a diagnosis rather s/he is a human being, a person with a name and a life. This approach humanizes the healing process. When you ask for ones life experiences from his/her view, you gain inside knowledge to his/her internal processes,01 you know and understand how s/he views and experiences him/herself, others and the world s/he lives in. The standard diagnostic process is important and of value but limited if we do not include the life experiences of the child from his/her view.

I was at Caelan Kuban's WONDERFUL training this morning, it was so encouraging and insightful! Thank you!

Amy Cervantes, Supports Coordinator/Neighborhood Service Organization

I first attended Bill Steele's TLC training back in April of 1998, and then again in June of 1998. Those first two marathon seminars (3 or 4 days, all day and into the nights) are still the MOST VALUABLE of all the training I have ever received as a therapist. I am 58 years old, got my first Master's back in 1979, and have had lots of training. In fact, it was only after receiving that intensive training in 1998 that I had the confidence to open my own private practice in August of that same year. The techniques I learned from Bill Steele always result in positive feedback from my clients, VERY positive feedback! I just finished a trauma intervention session with a former city cop, who has been on disability since 2002 for injuries received in the line of duty, who told me that no other so-called PTSD specialist has helped him as much.  (I'm worried about him coming back next week and discovering that I already used all my best tricks in the first two sessions!) I'm good and I know it, but only because of Bill Steele's guidance and materials! Without Bill, my work would be mediocre and have far less significance. Forgive me if I have lost credibility due to sounding so superlative, but I believe every word I have said to be true. THANK YOU, BILL STEELE !

Libby Christianson, MA, LMHC, LCSW, LCAC, NCC, NCSC, BSP

As a lecturer myself, I can say that Caelan Kuban is one of the very best trainers - I was so glad to attend her lecture about trauma in school-age children that I could not resist  giving my feedback - she is an amazing trainer!
Ms. Gohar Taj Imam

I found your explanation of the impact of trauma on the brain to be the most helpful explanation I've received - thank you!
Jeremy Fulwiler, Clinician Detroit, MI

The Clear Vision online course has been so inspiring in my own life, and I have even attempted a couple of the writing exercises with 2 clients this week so I am eager to learn more to be able to apply the journaling techniques more confidently. This type of class is a very different focus from what I typically take, but it has added such depth to my thinking already and I continue to be excited about using more of these creative strategies to learn more about myself.  Thank you again for introducing me to this work!
Rebecca A. Long, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist, NC Licensed

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading your articles (TLC's weekly Focus emails). I forward many of them to the teachers at school, because they are written in a way that is easy for any adult who works with children to understand. I was shocked when one teacher told me she was going to do a worry inventory with her whole class, after reading your article about worry and stress. She planned to use it to help address concerns about transitioning to middle school, and suggested doing something school wide in the fall. Thanks for writing brief articles that are easy to understand and provide practical interventions that a mental health professional or a lay person can use.
Kristina Wolff, LLMSW, Cesar Chavez Academy School Counselor, Detroit, MI

I just finished my first SITCAP sessions with an 8 year old girl who was experiencing horrific nightmares as a delayed grief reaction to when her grandfather died last year - he was buried alive. Her mother was hospitalized in December and since then the girl would not sleep in her own bed and continued to have nightmares and panic attacks. We just finished session 6 and I heard from the Mom that she slept in her own bed on Friday for the first time in months. This is a great program. Thank you so much!
Cheryl Jackson, MSW, CT, Program Director, Suncoast Kid's Place

I really appreciate your generosity to let me use Brave Bart and Kyoko's Japanese translation for this training. There are several people who are actually going to the most affected areas by this disaster in Japan, and I was glad that I was able to introduce Brave Bart to them (I did credit the author, TLC and Kyoko when I introduced it to them.) I was introduced to Brave Bart when I went to NY after 9/11 to work with the victims, and since then it has been my "must have" item. The Japan Association for Play Therapy that I am a board member of is now collaborating with Japan UNICEF and we started offering trainings to the volunteers at play areas in evacuation centers. It will be a long term project since the devastation is massive, but we are confident that Japan will walk through the road of recovery. Thank you for your support and please pray for my country.
Dr. Yumi Fariss

Thank you again. Best training I've had at Buffalo Public Schools. I was sad when it ended :-(  I'm considering visiting Detroit for the conference.
Shannon S. McGrath, School Psychologist, Buffalo Public Schools

I just wanted to reiterate (on top of all of the positive feedback you've already received!) how wonderful your training was over the past two days, very informative with relatable implementation.
Kelly Clees, School Psychologist, Buffalo, NY

I want you to know I do appreciate Bill Steele and TLC.  You folks remain the best trainers and most valuable resource for the work I do in my private practice and with children at school. Out of all my university courses and professional development efforts, the conferences I have attended by TLC have taught me the most. Thank you so very much!
Libby Christianson, Nappanee, IN

What a gift this course [Clear Vision 1 online course] has been to me!  I have also re-connected with my creative and artistic side and taken a collage class which continues to inspire my writings and my collection of papers, images, fabrics, and gives me pleasure.  I would have given myself a very high rating of compassion fatigue prior to this course.  I don’t know if that would have even been accurate but it was what I was feeling the moment I ordered this course and the difference I have felt has been amazing.  I would be VERY interested in taking the Clear Vision 2 and the collage project already has me interested.
Shrya Williams, LMSW, CTC

Thanks so much for the BEST conference I've been to in years!  I knew we needed a crisis plan and unfortunately every time we had an incident I felt totally useless and unprepared!!! In our district of 25+ campuses we have NOTHING in place and we had just started to get our team together to work on a plan. I had the vision of what I wanted to see in place and it's wonderful to know we don't have to reinvent the wheel!!!  It's already done!  Yeah!  So with this plan [TECIP] and hopefully some genuine interest we can have it ready for next fall. Once again, thank you for your presentation and continued help.  And you can guarantee that we'll be contacting you again once we get this team in place.
 Sofia Gallo, EPHS Counselor

Thank you. This course  [Psychophysiology of Trauma] is definitively extraordinary. I highly recommend it!
 Amelia Leony-Carrete, MS LCSW

I just wanted to let you and your staff know how much my training at the TLC institute last February has helped our district.

First of all, it has helped me with my ongoing Grief Group "Dealin' with the Healin'. . ." Secondly, I shared my training with all the counselors at my own school, Rockwall High School. Then one of our counselors loved it so much she is going to the conference this February in San Antonio and another is renewing her certification.

Two weeks ago, I shared my training on Critical Incident Response and Grief, as well as how to set up Grief Groups with all the counselors in the Rockwall Independent School District. The following Sunday, a young choir teacher at one of our elementary schools and her husband were instantly killed in a head on car collision.  Of course, a choir teacher touches every child in the school.  That Sunday night, the counselor and I set a plan in motion for the next day, following the procedures set up by the TLC institute.  (All credit is given to your program--be assured of that!)

The students and especially the teachers were understandably upset. Some of these young teachers were actually my students just a few short years ago and I think of them as my children. They were close to this young teacher (23 years old!) and were devastated.

The week went well and this week is going better. The counselor and principal at the school will keep a close eye on the students' and the teachers' progress and we will initiate more procedure as deemed necessary.

I just wanted to say a "thank you" to you and Dr. Steele and the entire organization. You have helped people heal.
Linda Duran, Counselor, Rockwall High School, Rockwall, TX

I wanted to offer kudos and commendations! I have decided to attend the live TLC Conference in February and have just booked my flight. What prompted this was taking the Children of Trauma online course–it is fabulous!  It all fits so perfectly with how I have been viewing trauma for years, but conceptualized so beautifully and synthesized in a way that makes so much sense. This way, I can experience the benefits of the live training, as well as have it apply to my RPT-S. I simply can't wait to attend the full conference, and learn the rest of the interventions and applications. This work is outstanding! I have also recruited one of my supervisees to attend, and perhaps 2 more. Thanks so much for everything and hope to meet you in February!
Cheri Spehar, MSW, LCSW, Apex, North Carolina

This was my first online course [Reaching and Teaching Stressed and Anxious Students] and was a great experience. Each lesson provided information that was challenging. I can say with confidence that the coursework provided valuable resources that will be used in my work with school children. The teacher, Barbara, was encouraging and honest all along the way. I'm looking forward to yet another class with her soon!

I attended the 3 day workshop last week. I just wanted to say that you did a wonderful job helping me understand how trauma affects children. It makes a big difference knowing that trauma looks like other disabilities and that it may not be that but that they experienced a traumatic event in their lives. What an awesome organization you work for! It is great to know that with time and drawings you can heal years of hurt, frustration and anger. You are awesome!!!!
Nicole Hampton, Paterson, NJ

Shortly after I took your outstanding class my mom became critically ill and then passed last fall so I did not pursue contacting you very promptly. I still remember your class and have carried many helpful ideas that I learned from you. You gave me your email so I could get a copy of your RtI referral form as it looked like it collected a lot of data succinctly. We also talked about you sharing some of the visual stories scripts so I could use them for reference. Whatever you can share, I would certainly appreciate. This TLC class was one of THE most helpful inservices that I have been to. Makes so much sense!! Thank you!!!
Karen Baldwin, SSW, LMSW, Port Huron, MI

I was impressed with how much I learned [in the TLC Art, Play, Drama, Music & Bibliotherapy with Traumatized Children online course] and how much it has stimulated me to make changes in my private practice. Thank you.
Sheila McKeon, Asheville, NC

I have been a counselor for many years, but I learned so many new techniques with this course [the TLC Art, Play, Drama, Music & Bibliotherapy with Traumatized Children online course]. I am very enthusiastic about using these ideas. I can see a real need with the children I work with. I found  the book to be easy to read and full of wonderful examples. I would highly recommend this to everyone in a therapeutic setting.
Deborah Shields, Mt. Adams School District, White Swan, WA

This course [in the TLC Art, Play, Drama, Music & Bibliotherapy with Traumatized Children online course] was wonderful and very helpful for the work I do in a  pediatric medical setting. Thank you for offering it!
Heather Stemas, Arlington, Va

I appreciate the ability to complete online courses to continue my certification. My experience with materials and personnel at TLC has always been positive. Thank you so much for guidance and support!
Sincerely, Pam Butler, Round Rock ISD, Round Rock, Texas

I thought this course [Resilience and Posttraumatic Growth] was thorough and that the online method for acquiring CEUs was convenient and user friendly. I was impressed with the quality of information and relevance of the assignments to the desired objectives. I will return to TLC for future CEUs as well as the opportunity afforded for growth in my field.
Colleen Presley, Amarillo, Texas

The overall course [Suicide] was excellent and much better than I expected or thought I would learn. I was surprised how much I could learn from doing this so definitely encouraged me for this training. The email communication in general with TLC was one of the main reasons I have done this because generally effective communication can effect in my opinion how a place is. Any question I had was always responded by a very fast email. Assignments were fast and very well attended, as well as always encouraging comments. Thanks for a wonderful course and I look forward to the training in San Antonio!

I am sorry that I have taken so long to get this to you. I thought that life would "calm down" once the organizing of the Trauma Training was over, but with the addition of an administrative license, things actually have been more hectic. We (Canton City Schools) have developed, organized and re-energized the Crisis Response Team for the district and have been able to follow TLC recommendations for quarterly meetings. We all learned so much and I continue to get expressions of gratitude from colleagues who attended the TLC training. What we learned from you in June has been put to use so many times already. We are so appreciative of the work you do and the support provided by TLC. I can't thank you enough.
Pamela Kalafice, School Counselor, Canton City Schools

A comment received from the Parent Trauma Resource Center...

This (PTRC) site was really helpful. Thank you very much. I feel more comfortable talking with my two boys 10 & 11 about their cousin's recent suicide. I want to be honest with them.

A comment received from the Parent Trauma Resource Center...
Not suggestion, but a thank you. My toddler is suffering from culture shock, having moved from NZ to Brussels, in the first of many diplomatic postings. A chance conversation led me to look up grief rather than stress to search for clues as to what my son was going through - and a search under 'toddler grief' led me directly to your (Parents Trauma Resource Center) site. I honestly cried with relief when I read the article - he has just about all the 'symptoms' described and it was such a load off my mind to know that he is reacting to the situation normally. I know your site is aimed at those who have suffered the usual loss, but just wanted to say thanks for saving this mothers mind - all of the comments are very pertinent to our situation. Like most Mums I just want the best for my son and it was tearing me apart not knowing what was going on - I will be sending other parents in similar situations to this site! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Rebecca Woodmore - Mum of Aaron (2 years), Brussels, Belgium

I just want to say how wonderful the San Antonio training was. My co-worker and I left feeling really energized about bringing many of the things we learned back to the district. We can't wait for the TLC Childhood Trauma Practitioner's Assembly in July. Thanks for everything!
Michael R. Markowitz MSEd, School Psychologist
, Dublin, Ohio

I recently attended the 4-day TLC training in San Antonio. This was the best training I have ever experienced! I felt very energized when I left and had such practical information to take back with me. And I need to take only one online course to qualify for the the Level 1 certification! Thank you!

Thank you! I enjoyed the TLC online course [Zero to Three: Trauma Interventions]. While the information presented was familiar to me, the assignments were helpful in integrating the information in new ways. this was the first time I have ever done an online training and I would definitely do it again.
Ellyn Schreiber

Just wanted to pass along how much my clients and I love your online Parent Trauma Resource Center. http://www.tlcinst.org/PTRC.html THANK YOU!!!
Heidi Weipert, Morrit-Weipert Psychological Counseling, North Muskegon, MI

I recently attended the TLC trauma training in San Antonio, TX and I would like to thank you all for an extremely informative, comprehensive and timely training. I work at a middle school in Southern California and we began our day today with news that one of our students was struck and killed by a car last night. This is the second student to be killed in a car accident this school year. While I am very sad to be writing under these circumstances, I am very grateful for my newfound understanding of grief and trauma and have found the TLC procedure for classroom presentations very helpful today. Thank you for your continued research and training opportunities.
Lisa Belliveau, School Counselor, Desert Springs Middle School, California

Bill Steele's I Feel Better Now! was an outstanding workshop! It was one of the most useful seminars we have ever been privledged to have at the District! And thank you for allowing us to copy the materials. Excellent! I hope we can have a follow-up. I believe this program (I Feel Better Now!) is fantastic! I wish we could do away from non-guidance duties so we can get back to what we do best. Again, this was one of the best workshops that I've been to in quite some time. Great presentation!

Just wanted to tell you that I was called to one of our elementary schools yesterday and today to assist with (2) students whose dad was shot at the Coney Island in Lincoln Park, you probably heard about it on the news. I thought a debriefing with them was appropriate. It was amazing watching the boys anxiety decrease as we went though the activities (safe place drawing, drawing what happened and allowing him to tell their stories) I was in Awe!!! It was also so nice to be able to pick up the "I Feel Better Now!" curriculum and be comfortable using it. I copied a few things for the parent and aunt, whom I met yesterday.
Today, the boys were not in school. I went into their respective classrooms and did read the book, "Lifetimes," and processed some reactions with the class - it went very well. The kids made cards - wow! Those were tear-jerkers!! I also was referred to two teachers who had students whose parents had died within the last year (one student carries around a picture of her dad in the casket). I asked the principal if I could do a group with those students and he welcomed it!!
Just wanted to confirm what you already know - the program works!! I gave the family my last copy of the "After a Traumatic Loss" booklet by Bill Steele. We would like to buy some more so I can give them to the Social Workers to keep on hand. It's nice to be able to give the parent something. Thanks for all TLC has done for our district!!!
Sandra Kluk, Taylor School District, Taylor, MI

We've started using the TLC curriculum and it has been extremely beneficial! The drawing allowed a four year old to disclose sexual abuse to me. Had I not attended the TLC training she may not have been offered that avenue to tell. Thanks again.
Kelly Warner, Turning Point

Hi, just wanted to say that I really like the layout of this (online) course and it is meeting my needs... This is the first course I have taken as I am registered at the summer institute for level one. Thanks!

Once again I have to commend TLC for the tools you have provided me with as a TLC member. As this school year began we had one high school that had 3 students die in 2 separate car accidents on the weekend before school began. Our TERT team felt well equipped to deal with supporting the school after planning our response for the first day of school, although a sad time, it was responded to utilizing our own school board response procedure that is complimented by the TLC materials and trained CYC's.
Further to this, a custodian of the same school died while working at the school last Monday evening and once again we were able to respond utilizing the same valuable resources - thank you...since we have received much positive feedback for our response to this additionally sad time I wanted to share with you how incredibly valuable TLC resources are for us. At the end of the day we called in an additional 9 TLC trained CYC's to do some small group operational debriefing (for a very large staff group) and once again the resources TLC afforded us helped to make the response run smoothly and effectively. Thank you.
Janice Walker, CYC Supervisor, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, Belleville, Ontario

I just returned from the [9/11 5-year Anniversary] ceremony at the Pentagon. It was good to see so many of our families. Thank you so much for all you did to help us. Your trauma work was an important part of their recovery.
Annemarie M. Bezold, LCSW, Coordinator, Grief Program, Fairfax-Falls, VA

Dr. Steele, I am not sure whether or not your remember me. I attended the week long training in San Diego, CA in 2002. It was held at the Double Tree Hazzard Centre. I am from Yuma, AZ. I coordinate our countywide trauma response team which consists of school counselors, psychologists, and nurses from 9 different school districts in our county. Also included on our team are mental health professionals from 3 different community agencies and at least a dozen or more first responders including a rep. from each law enforcement agency and fire service in our community, both city and county. We have done this work since 2001 and have responded way to often to a number of tragic events. Since January 1, 2004, when I actually began keeping track of our work, we have had 25 kids under the age of 19 die in our small community. We have provided interventions in each of those cases. 14 of those were different car accidents, 2 suicides, 5 small children in a mass murder of a family near one of our schools, one child who died in the bathroom at school and 3 drownings. We have been rather busy. Your materials have been incredibly helpful to all of us, and we appreciate your continued work. Our town is fairly isolated and very near the mexican border about 2.5 hours from San Diego, and about the same from Phoenix. It was here that we had the car accident with 22 illegal aliens packed in a suburban and ran from border patrol a few weeks ago. 10 died at the scene and another 2 at hospitals later in the week. We utilize our team both in and out of the school setting and get our share of practice. We have learned a lot in the last 5 years. I just wanted to say thanks for all that you do.
Tori Bourguignon, MEd, NCC, Counselor Coordinator, Yuma School District 1, YCCISM Team Director

I just received my membership renewal in the mail. I am writing to let you know that after 12 years in the field, I have made a career change and won't be renewing my membership at this time. I hope to sometime in the future.I also wanted to let you know that my certification was one of the most important things I ever did in my career. It allowed me to help many children in my small rural community and it was the most rewarding part of my job. Thank you for giving me that opportunity.

"This has been an outstanding workshop! The information is useful both personally and professionally. I left on 11/2/05, feeling better and with new information. I came to this workshop as a “professional”, but was actually here for myself as a Katrina survivor. The simple exercise of dividing my life into 8 sections. Knowing how this tragedy was only one part of my life was so helpful."

"An amazing thing happened in my home last night. I found a copy of Brave Bart, as I was cleaning out a book case and I convinced my five-year-old niece to allow me to read to her. She loves cats, so the subject was appealing. She sat very quietly and listened to every word. When the story was over, I told her how brave she was since mommy died and she convinced me to read it again. I can't remember if she has ever sat in my lap for this long a period of time. During the second reading, she actually fell asleep and it was only 8:00 pm. Amanda rarely can sleep before midnight, since her mother died on 9/11. I don't remember who brought me this book (Brave Bart), but I am forever grateful."
Deborah O'Connor, Whitestone, Queens, New York
