Cathy Malchiodi
Bill Steele Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Trauma Intervention
Cathy Malchiodi, PhD, LPCC, CPAT has published numerous books, chapters, and articles in the field of art therapy including, Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children, Breaking the Silence: Working With Traumatized Children, Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children, and Understanding Children’s Drawings, which are standards in the field. She has trained counselors, therapists, and teachers throughout the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. Cathy has been presented with a number of awards for her clinical contributions to children, adults, and families, including a Presidential Award. Her “hands-on” workshops teach practical and valuable interventions to use with children of all ages. She currently writes the TLC blog, Trauma & Children, is on the faculty of Lesley University, and writes The Healing Arts for Psychology Today.
Gretchen Miller
TLC Trauma Consultant Supervisor Award
Gretchen M. Miller, MA, ATR-BC, CTC is a Registered Board Certified Art Therapist practicing in Cleveland, Ohio. She specializes in working with children, adolescents, and families impacted by childhood trauma, domestic violence, and grief & loss. In addition to providing trauma informed contract work to local agencies, Gretchen works for the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center in the agency’s community outreach and shelter programs facilitating individual and group work with youth and women. Gretchen also teaches and presents regionally, and nationally on the application of art therapy and trauma intervention. She is an adjunct faculty member for the Art Therapy & Counseling Graduate Program at Ursuline College, a consultant to the Combat Paper Project, and recently co-authored a chapter on domestic violence and authored a chapter on adolescents in the forthcoming Second Edition of Cathy Malchiodi’s Handbook of Art Therapy.
Jean West
TLC Trauma Consultant Award
Jean West, MSW, LCSW, CTC is a School Social Worker for the St. Joseph School District in Missouri. She splits her time between the District’s Homeless Program and a local high school. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who also has a part time practice specializing in working with traumatized children and family therapy. Jean is also chair of the Research Based Workgroup with Circle of Hope and through collaborative efforts of Circle of Hope and the St. Joseph School District will be part of an initiative to have over 30 trained Certified Trauma Specialists in St. Joseph this fall. She spoke at the 2010 National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth conference on trauma and homelessness, and has done many local presentations. Jean was the 2009 Support Person of the Year for the St. Joseph School District.
John DeFrancisco
TLC Trauma Specialist Award
John DeFrancisco is a Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified Art Therapist. He has 41 years experience in his work with children and adults with a variety of handicapping conditions. He attended the University of Wisconsin and Antioch University where he earned degrees in Education, Clinical Art Therapy and Psychology. He holds a K through 12 teaching certification and has worked in educational and clinical settings. In addition, he served as Director and Assistant Professor of Art Therapy / Art Education at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota and taught graduate courses at Hamline University in St. Paul. He has presented nationally and published articles on Childhood Anxiety Disorders, Mental Imagery, Art Therapy and Treatment Interventions, Child and Adult Sexual Abuse and Domestic Violence.
Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services
Trauma & Loss Agency Award
Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is a nonprofit organization founded in 1910 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The organization’s 220 acre main campus is located at 300 68th Street in Grand Rapids. This comprehensive behavioral health center also includes a network of 22 outpatient clinics and satellite offices in Michigan and Iowa, along with a continuum of residential services and other community based services. The Center for Psychiatric Residential Services (CPRS) is part of Pine Rest’s continuum of care, providing long term psychiatric residential services for adolescents aged 11-18. The programs within the Center for Psychiatric Residential Services strive to create and maintain a therapeutic milieu intended and developed to support the ongoing emotional, behavioral, and educational needs of the residents. The staff in this program has been trained by The National Institute for Loss in Children and incorporates TLC’s SITCAP® model programs, as well as other evidence based practices, within the treatment environment.
