Trauma and Loss Clinical Specialist Certification
Level-1 Specialist Certification lays the foundation for understanding trauma and provides training in the use of TLC's evidence based Structured Sensory Interventions for Children, Adolescents and Parents (SITCAP).
Level-1 Certification requires you to attend a minimum of 3 days at TLC trainings and the remaining requirements can be completed through online courses and an essay exam. The courses may be completed over a period of time.
After completing Level-1 Certification you may use the credentials "CTS" which stands for Certified Trauma Specialist.
Level-1 Required Courses
- Children of Trauma
- Structured Sensory Intervention (SITCAP)
- After the Crisis: Managing Recovery of Students & Staff
- 2 TLC courses of your choice (TLC online courses or TLC Guest Lectures)
- At-home essay exam*
OR if attending the TLC Childhood Trauma Practitioners Assembly
- 4 Assembly Level-1 courses (Children of Trauma, Structured Sensory Interventions, After the Crisis OR Trauma Debriefing AND Guest Lecture)
- 1 TLC online course
- At-home essay exam*
*The at-home essay exam is a requirement for Level-1 Certification. There are two exams. One is for those who are applying for Clinical Specialist Certification and another for those applying for School Specialist Certification. The cost is $175 to take the exam, plus purchase of the SITCAP® textbook. The exam does NOT provide CEU's. It is a comprehensive essay exam that will take anywhere from 4 - 8 hours to complete, depending upon the person. It can be submitted to TLC for credit up to 6 months from date of purchase. The Essay Exams are available online. You may also call the TLC office toll-free at 877-306-5256 to register for the exam and have it mailed to you.
Maintaining Certification
To keep your TLC Certification up-to-date all you need to do each year is:
- Complete one of TLC’s CE approved 6 credit online courses, OR
- Attend a one-day TLC training
