Adolescent Grief Online Course

Instructor: Dave Opalewski, MA

Adolescents are not supposed to experience death. Although it should never happen, the harsh reality is that it does, and when it does, it is a terrible shock for the adolescent. This course will help you, as the caring adult, be a guide through this troubling time by helping you understand what the adolescent is going through and giving you comprehensive techniques to address the situation. This is a time when a caring, unassuming adult can make a positive difference in a young person by fostering growth and maturity.

The required text book, Adolescent Grief Issues, written by Dave Opalewski and published by The National Center for Youth Issues, is available for purchase from the TLC Online Bookstore. Topics covered in this book include: Experiences and observations, uniqueness of adolescent grief, normal vs. abnormal, grief vs. trauma, sudden death vs. anticipated death, basics for the caring adult, adolescent suicide, biochemistry of adolescent suicide and violence, common adolescent grief concerns, the return to school, and advice from adolescents to the caring adult

Cost of taking this course online is $100. Upon successful completion of assignments tests and evaluation, a certificate of completion can be downloaded. CEs are not included in the price of this course but can be purchased in the TLC Online Bookstore. If you have questions about CEUs email [email protected].

I have truly enjoyed taking this course and reading the book, "Adolescent Grief Issues" which I found to be clearly written and full of valuable insight.

Really enjoyed this course.

I really appreciated the feedback that I received from the instructor. He also responded to the submission of my assignments in a VERY timely manner. Thank you for offering this course. It will be helpful in my daily work.

I initially thought the text was rather simplistic, but once I processed the assignments I had a greater appreciation of the course objectives. Well done.

This course was excellent and I learned a lot. The assignments were great!

This course and manual written by David Opalewski is one that I will recommend to anyone who works with adolescents. He demonstrates an understanding of this unique age and clearly identifies the unique stategies for working with adolescents. This book and course has given me clear guidance as a caring adult and the confidence to do so. Thank you Mr. Opalewski.

I really learned valuable tools that I am now using in private practice as well as with children I am in contact with on a personal level. The information provided was very real and helpful to adolescents dealing with grief/loss issues.

Very informative book. A lot of it seems common sense, but it is surprising how many people do not know how to deal with a greiving individual let alone an adolescent that is greiving.

The text is excellent. I ordered Childhood Grief Issues to study.

I really did not know a lot of the information in the course book. I'll be using this information in communicating with everyone not just adolescents: Not avoiding the subject of death or saying the deceased name.

Navigating this site was a challenge for me until I got the hang of it. The course itself was very helpful. The learning process was both informative and affirming. Thank you.

Good course. A lot of valuable information
